ITAS Solutions Solves a Difficult Programming Mystery

The Story

A lumber company could not solve the mystery as to why its log-stripping machine would not turn on. Their maintenance crew reported that this had happened before, but they had searched all over the machine for faulty wires or any mechanical or electrical malfunction that would affect the machine

The Challenge

The client was reluctant to call their usual consultant, because this issue had happened many times before, and they had lost confidence. Our technician started his approach with the PLC (programmable logic controller) that is used to automate the machine’s processes. The PLC’s manufacturer was new to our technician, as was this type of industrial machinery. The documentation for the logic alone filled an entire 3-ring binder.

The Solution

The technician asked questions about which inputs were affecting the malfunction to better understand how the log-stripper operated. After eight hours of analysis and reading hundreds of pages of documentation, our technician found a discrepancy between the documentation and what was actually programmed inside the machine. The mystery was solved.

Custom Programming Increases Productivity and Reduces Errors

The Story

Our client’s billing software was outdated and cumbersome to use. It did not provide the multi-user functionality the company desperately needed, and it was not compatible with newer versions of their current operating system. ITAS Solutions researched the client’s needs by watching the system in action. ITAS Solutions developed an internal web portal using AJAX technology that would automatically save changes whenever a user left a field, preventing the need for a manual save and reducing data loss. In addition, all 10 years’ worth of historical data was transferred via a one-time migration process.

The Result

The custom software provided increased workflow productivity and reduced redundancy with auto-save. We also developed new reporting features and data mining tools. As the custom software was designed as a web portal, the new system has greater longevity.

ITAS Solutions Solves Urgent Phone Routing Error

The Story

Our client approached us with an emergency. They had recently moved offices and the phone company had misrouted their phone lines. The client could not answer incoming calls and the phone company could not identify where the main line was terminating.

The Challenge

Due to the sensitive nature of this client’s business, they needed the problem resolved as soon as possible. However, the destination carrier could not find the porting request that was submitted, and claimed it would take two weeks minimum to complete the port request.

The Solution 

ITAS Solutions collected details from the client and the phone vendors, consulted with building management, and discovered where the line should have been installed. To quickly solve the problem, our technician ran the phone lines from the building’s equipment room back the client’s offices and installed a $400 PBX. He then reconfigured the client’s IP phones to work with the PBX.

The Result

The client was taking calls in a matter of days, instead of weeks. The stress of missing customer calls was greatly reduced by ITAS Solutions’ experience and ingenuity. The client could focus on his business while we focused on the solution.
